Our innovative team

Our foundations in microbiome science

Our Co-founders, Professor Gene Tyson and Professor Philip Hugenholtz, are recognised world leaders in their fields who pioneered major advancements in metagenomics and set new standards for the classification of microorganisms.

They have continued to build on their early discoveries, using ever-advancing technology and bioinformatic approaches to reveal more of the microbiome and its relationships to disease conditions. The founders continue to ensure that the highest scientific standards are used throughout the company.

Professor Philip Hugenholtz

Throughout his career as a microbiologist, Professor Hugenholtz has made globally recognised contributions to the field, publishing over 200 papers in respected microbiology and genomics journals and being repeatedly listed on the Web of Science’s Highly Cited Researchers list. He has been instrumental in the development and application of many of the methods used in microbiome analysis, including metagenomic DNA sequencing and the standardisation of bacterial taxonomy. Professor Hugenholtz is a member of the Australian Academy of Sciences and is also Director of the Australian Centre for Ecogenomics (ACE), Australia’s leading centre for microbial genomic research.
Publications

Professor Gene Tyson

As a microbial ecologist, Professor Tyson was the first person to publish the use of metagenomic sequencing to assess microbial communities and to inform the culture of novel microorganisms. These pioneering papers highlighted the potential of metagenomics to provide a high-resolution taxonomic and functional picture of microbial communities. Since then, Professor Tyson has continued to develop many of the tools used in the analysis of metagenomic data and is also repeatedly listed on the Web of Science’s Highly Cited Researchers list. Professor Tyson is leading microbiome research at the Queensland University of Technology.
